Public-by-default vs Consent-by-default

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE

Privacy = Consent, not secret.

How do we make it normal ?

Imagine opening your banking app... and seeing that everyone can read your balance.

That's exactly what public blockchains offer.

It's time to change the settings.

A slightly uncomfortable story

The tobacconist knows my wife's name, our address, her birth dates, even her height.

Not because we told him all that. Just because she looks young.

Every time she bought tobacco for me, he asked for her ID.

Now, he doesn't even need to see it: he already has all her sensitive information in his head.

The problem isn't the salesperson. It's the system.

To prove you're over 18, you have to reveal your entire identity.

Correcting the system means consent-by-default:

  • Proving the fact, not handing over your biography.

Proof of age ≠ civil status.

Default public = leakage through inertia, not by choice.

OK, there are advantages: fighting money laundering, scams, fraud.

But the price to pay is enormous.

Social cost:

Your profile becomes transparent: your desires, income, social circle.

This opens the door to harassment, blackmail, and threats.

Business cost:

Your competition can read your data like an open book.

Copying, imitating, targeting: it's a strategic flaw.

Cultural cost:

Knowing that you are being watched changes everything.

You censor yourself, you hold back, you stop being yourself.

Freedom of expression dissolves.

Flaws create culture.

And today, our culture is shaped by a toxic setting: public by default.

The principle of “consent-by-default”.

Share by choice, not by obligation.

That’s not just a feature.
It’s a culture. A new default.

Privacy by design = our fundamental right restored.

Imagine this:

  • You prove you’re over 18 without sharing your birthdate.

  • You prove you have funds without exposing your wallet.

  • You prove the fact without giving away the person.

That’s consent by default.
That’s the future we should be building.

Some important use cases

Prove you’re 18 without handing over your entire identity.
Less data shared = less risk carried.

Prove solvency without opening your bank account.
Stay compliant, without selling your privacy.

Log in with your email without gifting your digital life to an ad agency.
No tracking. No trade-offs.

Private payments.
When privacy = the easiest UX, the private road becomes the lazy road.

Compliance without exposure.

For years, they sold us a false choice: privacy or compliance.

As if protecting your data meant breaking the rules.

But ZK changes the game.
You don’t hand over your vault, you hand over a receipt.

A proof that says: “this is valid” without exposing what’s inside.

Think of it as read-only access to trust.
Limited, consented, and revocable.

Compliance without surveillance. Privacy without compromise.

Common objections, simple answers:

  • “people don’t care about privacy.”
People don’t care… until they pay the price.
    Culture follows defaults.
    Change the default, change behavior.

  • “zk is too slow / too heavy.”
That’s not a dead end, that’s an engineering problem.
    Optimizations, pre-proofs, caching.
Speed is a matter of iteration.

  • “but what about metadata?”
We don’t need to kill it, we need to minimize it.
Private routing, aggregation, reduced logging. Leaks can be designed out.

  • “this is illegal.”
Wrong. The law demands proofs, not your whole life.
    Compliance ≠ surveillance.

How do we measure progress?

Not in hype or market cap but in defaults.

  • Private-by-default rate: the share of flows that are born private.

  • Taps-to-private : less friction, fewer clicks to stay invisible.

  • Selective disclosure: proofs and receipts instead of full data dumps.

That’s the real scoreboard.

Change the defaults, and you change the culture.

Blockchains should be a trust layer, not a gossip machine.
The web doesn’t need more exposure, it needs more proof.

Every time we swap disclosure for verification, we move closer to a world where privacy is not a luxury… but the default.

That’s the zkInternet.

Privacy isn’t a crime, it’s civilization.
