The Production Designer Playbook

The Production Designer Playbook

The complete, zero-nonsense Concept Art guide to understand the Production Pipeline, level up your Design and Rendering skills, and increase your value in the eyes of Studios.

What to expect from it ?

Instead of hunting for :

  • 5435743 different Youtube videos,

  • Gumroad tutorials,

  • half-baked Reddit advice

  • and old blog posts that all contradict each other…

We condensed everything you need to level up your Design, Rendering and Production understanding abilities, and we put it in the right order for you.

This is what we give to every single mentee joining our Mentorship to prepare, level up in advance, and get all our knowledge about design and technique before we starts.

This makes up for around 30% of the videos they'll get across the entire Mentorship.

It's in 4 parts

1️⃣ The Foundations

In it we explain :

  • the reality of the job

  • the attitude you need to have towards it

  • what studios expect from a concept artist

  • the deal-breakers that get your portfolio rejected and how to fix these

  • How to navigate today's state of the industry (we're in 2026, not 2015 fantasy-land anymore)

And more importantly : how to use this seemingly saturated market to your advantage to stand out positively.

Once that is done, we move to what you come for

2️⃣ The Design Process

This is where most aspiring concept artists (and a lot of pros tbh) struggle.

They draw one character or environment from start to finish…And then... that's it, "that's my concept art piece"

NOPE

There is no way anyone is gonna be called a concept artist with a collection of finished pictures.

So in that second chapter, we break down the entire design process from start to finish :

  • How to read your brief, brainstorm and collect the right references for it

  • How to push the designs in different directions in the early sketches phase

  • How to pick and polish the best one

  • How to create every single turnaround, pros page and callout sheet the rest of the production team needs to turn your Concept in 3D

  • And finally, how to render everything properly

The goal is to ensure you know how to help every single person of the creative team in a studio with your concept rather than just making flashy pictures that nobody can use in a studio.

Then, we move to advanced content

3️⃣ Pushing your Design and Rendering abilities

You will get video case studies and breakdowns of :

  • The most common rendering and design mistakes, for characters, environments and props, and how to fix them

  • A complete description of all the gameplay elements in game and how to put them in your designs

  • How to inject better storytelling in your work

  • And finally, how to design elements that are monetizable by studios, so you make your work more appealing to them (and it's very junior friendly)

And finally...

4️⃣ Exercise

This is a set of 5-week of optional homework to apply everything you've learnt so far and craft a portfolio chapter way better than what you could before.

By the end of it, you will know exactly how to :

  • ✅ Positively stand out in today's seemingly saturated Market

  • ✅ Understand fully how the Concept Art Industry works

  • ✅ Create Concept Art that is valuable for the Production Pipeline and Studios, past the bluesky phase

  • ✅ Nail every single step of the Design Process so Art Directors and Clients love you

  • ✅ Get rid of the Blank Page Syndrome and iterate drastically different ideas for any design task

  • ✅ Level up your Rendering Abilities

  • ✅ Design within game archetypes and constraints

  • ✅ Know how studios make money, and how to use that to skyrocket your hireability

You will also get :

  • 💝 200€ of Discount on the Mentorship if you apply and are allowed in it
